Blog #2

The metro Chicago immigration factbook states that as the immigration percentage of a neighborhood grows high school completion rates become lower. This is not surprising to me. First of all, English would not be the student’s first language. Learning in a different language makes the material much more difficult to understand. This is their first disadvantage. These students may also be looked down upon by the teacher, because they are not native born students. It has been shown that teachers tend to teach the way in which they were taught. If these students are being taught by al older teacher, they may have a disadvantage because this teacher may not be very open minded to immigrant students. These students must work twice as hard to graduate.
